Topic of the thesis: Wage inequality between standard and atypical workers and the role of labour market institutions
Abstract: The academic literature on the causes of wage inequality has mainly focused on earning differentials due to different endowments of human capital. However, the explanatory capacity of these factors appears limited.
With this work, therefore, I focus on the role of different contractual forms, particularly fixed-term and part-time contracts, in explaining the large variability in wages between workers with equal education.
In particular, I analyse how the recession due to the pandemic amplified wage differentials between standard workers (permanent and full-time) and atypical ones (temporary and part-time), and whether these differentials were contained or amplified by different labour market institutions, such as collective bargaining coverage, the level of collective bargaining, and the presence of a minimum wage.
Finally, through quantile regression I want to investigate whether the impact of labour market institutions has been the same along the wage distribution.
