Topic of thesis: Migrant organizations and repoduction of diasporic values: ethnographic case studies
Abstract: The study of diasporic communities has become an urgent issue as the emergence and growth of ethnic communities continuously shape contemporary Europe. Increased globalization, and the large influx of migrants into the continent, have led to increased diversification and a growing inequality in European societies. To manage this inequality, ethnic communities often turn to migrant organisations. I propose to place migrant organisations at the center of diaspora research, thus exploring how they guarantee continuity of diasporic values in terms of mobilization, socio-cultural boundary maintenance and integration of young generation. The study will present ethnographic research of three ethnic groups in three European countries: Ukrainians in Italy, Moroccans in the Netherlands and Armenians in France. Migrant organisations will be the main focus of the study giving they are concrete illustration that immigrants distinguish their ethnic or national identity from others, identifying more with individuals with similar backgrounds.
