Who shapes the cities of the future, and who experiences the changes? NaspRead, the public outreach platform of the University of Milan’s Department of Social and Political Sciences and the NASP network, will explore these questions in an online panel discussion at Milano Digital Week 2026. The event will take place on Zoom on September 30, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Who shapes the city of the future? How do urban changes affect the people who live there? These questions are at the heart of “URBANO TROPPO URBANO. Politics, citizens, and businesses: who shapes the city of the future, and who experiences its changes?”, an online panel organized by NaspRead for Milano Digital Week 2026. This year’s festival runs from September 30 to October 4 and is dedicated to the “generative city.”
The event is free and will take place online on Wednesday, September 30, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The speakers are Maria Tullia Galanti, who teaches political science at the University of Milan; Alessandro Gerosa, who teaches the sociology of cultural processes at the University of Milan; and Giovanni Semi, who teaches urban sociology at the University of Turin and Politecnico di Torino. Matteo Cianflone, a journalist and editorial assistant at NaspRead, will moderate.
The discussion will focus on the people and institutions shaping cities—including public authorities, businesses, and residents—and on how their decisions affect daily life. Taking Milan as a starting point, the panel will explore grassroots participation and the experience of NoLo, major real estate developments and the ways they are portrayed, housing inequality, and the relationship between the city and its surrounding area.
The speakers will also examine technologies used to plan and manage urban spaces, from artificial intelligence and digital twins to data centers and their impact on local communities. The challenges of climate change and potential conflicts among competing interests will also inform the discussion.
