Topic of the thesis: Labour market policies for a just transition: an analysis of green welfare trajectories in EU countries
Abstract: This research investigates the policies and politics of the just transition within EU welfare states, focusing on the adaptation of labour market institutions to ecological challenges. Employing a neo-institutional framework, the study explores institutional conversion in response to environmental risks, emphasising policy integration across social, economic, and environmental dimensions. Five case studies (Italy, Ireland, Germany, Poland, and Finland) are expected to provide a comparative analysis of national and subnational responses. The research will examine the political dynamics and the roles of trade unions, political parties, and multi-level governance in shaping just transition strategies and trajectories. Methodologically, the study combines qualitative data from policy documents and semi-structured interviews with quantitative analysis of environmental and social indicators. The findings aim to offer insights into the structural changes within EU welfare states, contributing to the literature on eco-social policies and the emerging concept of eco-welfare states, highlighting the importance of integrated approaches for achieving sustainable and equitable labour market transitions.
