Topic of the thesis: Constructing Labour's membership: Momentum and the making of a movement-party.
Abstract:Through the analysis and restructuring of Gauja's model (Gauja, 2015), the project aims at the analysis of the changes in the construction of membership in the British Labour Party. Following an analysis of the processes set in motion by the modernizing process (1983-2010), a case study on the phase of Corbyn's leadership is proposed. The empirical research is focused on how Momentum, the movement born out of Corbyn's campaign, concurs in this new phase of membership construction. Two dimensions are analysed: 1) that of the innovation of collective action practices, towards the inclusion of a direct social-conflictual stance into the party's repertoires and 2) that of the cultural-ideological change set in motion by the encounter between the old labour left and new "movementist" members. The emergence of Momentum as a leading faction in the Labour Party is deeply changing the nature of the party, transforming it in a way that resembles Dalla Porta's definition of movemement-party (Dalla Porta, 2017). The process is observed from the point of view of the changing in the costruction of the membership, observing how Momentum develops and how the innovation of practices and discourse are confronted by the Party structure.
