Topic of thesis: Emerging Notions of Citizenship – Do mobilisations by undocumented migrants cause a shift in the understanding of citizenship? (working title)
Abstract: All over Europe migrants can be seen struggling to acquire a new citizenship. Their mobilisations call us to rethink the notion of citizenship. Citizenship is more than just the static possession of a nationality and in these times of transnational migration our traditional understanding of citizenship, as intrinsically connected to a membership of a nation-state, is increasingly contested. Citizenship requires a new dynamic conceptualisation. My PhD research addresses the struggle for citizenship with a particular focus on the mobilisations of, and debate on, undocumented migrants. It will consist of two components: (1) a comparative ethnographic research of claim making to citizenship by (undocumented) migrants, and (2) a media analysis of the representation and discussion of this claim making. The empirical research will be confined to the study of citizenship struggles in Italy and the Netherlands. Its aim is to gain a better understanding of the socio-political dynamics of citizenship and inform the public debate with socially relevant knowledge.
