Topic of thesis:

I aim at studying how employment contract and social class of origin influence the housing condition of young adults aged 20-39, in France and in Italy, through a quantitative-qualitative research design. In particular, I aim at investigating how temporary employment contracts and lower social classes of origin affect the probability to live in rental or at the parents’ house. At the same time, I shall inquire how permanent employment contracts and upper classes of origin impact the probability to live in home ownership. I consider, however, that besides employment contracts and class origin themselves, the subjective perception of both job precariousness and familial norms and expectations are important decision factors as well. The quantitative analysis will be based on European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU SILC) and carried out employing cross-sectional analysis referred to 2005 and 2011 in both Italy and France. The qualitative analysis will be based on semi-structured interviews with selected Italian and French young adults. I shall investigate youth housing condition through standardized dimensions and subjective perceptions. The aim is to emphasize both how the national context affects young adult’s housing conditions, and how housing conditions are not the pure effect of institutional constraints on individual decisions. To the best of my knowledge, very few cross-national researches focus on youth housing condition in France and Italy in this manner.

Research interests:

My research interests are varied and embrace the areas of sociology of work, sociology of education, housing and employment policies, international comparison in general and Italy and French in particular , and quantitative and qualitative methods in the social sciences
