Topic of the thesis: The Role of Generative AI in Critical Thinking and Decision-Making
Abstract: My project studies how the introduction of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) systems influences critical thinking and decision-making in organisations. As organisations increasingly use GenAI to support activities such as producing documents, analysing information, and guiding decisions, especially in human resource management, these systems begin to play a direct role in everyday work. While existing research has mainly examined the effects of AI on efficiency and performance, less is known about how these tools affect human judgment and reflective thinking over time. The project approaches decision-making as a practice that involves interpretation, evaluation, and discretion, rather than as a purely technical outcome. Critical thinking is understood as the effort people make to question information, assess alternatives, and justify decisions when working with AI-supported systems. Using a longitudinal single-case study, the research follows an organisation before and after the implementation of a generative AI–based HR system. Methodologically, data will be collected through interviews, organisational documents, surveys, and system-use information at multiple points in time. The project aims to show how reliance on AI, cognitive effort, and evaluative practices change as people gain experience with the system. By doing so, it seeks to clarify whether generative AI supports, replaces, or constrains critical thinking in organisational decision-making, and to contribute to discussions on the responsible use of AI in organisations.
