Topic of the thesis:Youth unemployment in Europe: Comparative Trends and Policy Remedies
Abstract:The 2008-2009 economic crisis and the subsequent recession have negatively affected labour markets all over the word and in EU countries, undermining, especially, the labour market integration of youth. However, despite of the overall increase in the rates of youth unemployment on the whole continent, there were significant differences in the way in which countries were affected by this phenomenon and in the extent to which they managed to handle the problem. The current project aims at exploring the patterns of youth unemployment in five European countries characterized by different economic and political institutional systems (Austria, Ireland, Italy, Poland and Sweden) covering 2007-2018 period. Into-deep country analysis of relevant educational, training and labour market institutional frameworks as well as policy instruments and reforms introduced after the crisis will allow to identify the factors that predetermined success/failure in mitigating youth unemployment in specific country context explaining, thus, divergence of outcomes across Europe. The comparative perspective will allow, instead, to shed the light on similarities & differences in terms of both institutional characteristics and the policy instruments employed to tackle youth unemployment pointing out at possible institutional transformations and convergences across countries.
