Topic of thesis: Citizenship as a process and as a practice for migrants in urban spaces: role of urban social movements and institutional reaction.
Abstract: The present research project is constructed as a continuation of my former final thesis draft in the framework of a Master Degree in “Migrations Internationales, Espaces et Sociétés”. Starting from the results and reflections of that work, I intend to deepen the studies on the concept of citizenship trying to articulate its two main interpretations, the one in terms of practice, the other in terms of legal status. Posing the question of what are the subjects supporting migrants’ “processes of citizenship” (“processi di cittadinizzazione”, Ambrosini, 2016: 92), I hypothesize the intervention of urban social movements and occupied and selfmanaged social centres as alternative spaces where these processes are triggered. Furthermore, considering the dimension of illegitimacy of occupied social centres and the social representations of passivity and obedience conveyed on migrants, it will be question of understand if the development of these “processes of citizenship” helps or hinders the institutional process of acquisition of citizenship and the formal pathways to integration. The hypothesis of this research project will be tested and verified through a comparative field work between the neighborhood of San Siro in Milan and that of Exarchia in Athens.
