During recent years, the Varieties of Capitalism approach has provided one of the most important contributions on the analysis of advanced capitalism. However, there are national experiences that seem to be hard to explain from this theoretical perspective. In the first part of the seminar, I will underline that this is particularly true for countries that are characterised by a high degree of internal diversity, such as the Italian case, in which it is possible to find subnational varieties of capitalism. The comparative analysis will underline the analytical advantages of a methodological approach that takes into account the influence of regional institutional architecture on some of the main features of contemporary capitalism, such as processes of dualisation, the intensification of regional disparities or the resilience of some kind of regional varieties of capitalism. The second part of the seminar will focus on empirical case studies of regional innovation in the field of labour market, welfare and development policies.
