Topic of thesis: Using democracy as the antidote to terrorism
Abstract: My research aims at providing a philosophical framework for a sustainable counterterrorism strategy. It does so by inquiring initially about the moral justifiability of terrorism and later about the possibility of using democratic inclusiveness for canalizing the demands of terrorist groups into peaceful political processes. If terrorism is morally unjustifiable and impermissible, and if there is the need for a more fundamental strategy than the war on terror, then we ought to search for different methods to counter it. My suggestion is to construct a democratic theory so inclusive that it embraces even the most extreme demands and is able to generate a policy output as a result of the political process in which extreme demands are positioned as inputs.
Research Interests: political theory, normative theory, democratic theory, ethics of political violence, terrorism
