Topic of the thesis: The determinants  in the choice of pursuing studies in the context of mass university

Abstract: The expansive phenomenon-a dominant feature of the evolution of higher education systems in the 1900s-has resulted not only in a profound transformation of the university model but has also prompted questions about students’ and families’ choices to participate in higher education beyond compulsory education. Starting with economic and sociological theories that explain the main mechanisms of choice behind this growth in demand for education, the research will be oriented through identifying four groups of factors: economic and employment factors, the pursuit of credentials and social status, factors linked to personal and cultural interests, and the influence of external actors on student decisions. The research will be carried out through a survey, answered by a sample of high school graduates who have not yet decided to enroll in university, and by first-year students at different Italian universities. By applying regression models and hierarchical cluster analysis, we intend to investigate (I) to what extent the decision to undertake university studies is the result of a variable mix of the factors identified above, evaluating their relationship with the educational and socio-economic background of origin;  (II) to what extent the composition of different factors may be associated not only with the choice to enroll in university but also with the future university career of those who enroll. This research project, therefore, aims to contribute to the current theoretical debate on access to university studies by collecting data showing the possible heterogeneous composition of factors underlying choice and how they may be related to students’ backgrounds and their prospects for career progression.
