Topic of the thesis: My project explores how industrial relations, particularly the role of trade unions and institutional systems, shape the impact of AI technologies on work organization and job quality in Germany and Italy's telecommunications sector. By comparing these two contexts, the research aims to understand how different social and institutional factors affect the outcomes of technological change in the workplace.

Abstract: The objective of the project is to investigate how industrial relations influence the impact of technological innovations, particularly those pertaining to artificial intelligence (AI) technologies on the organisation of work and the quality of employment in the telecommunication sector in Germany and Italy. The project will examine the role of trade unions and their power resources, as well as the influence of different institutional characteristics in industrial relations systems. A qualitative approach based on interviews with key stakeholders and document analysis will be employed to explore the different outcomes of digital transformation within the same sector, depending on different institutional contexts. The findings are expected to provide valuable insights into the role of social and institutional factors in shaping the effects of technology, thereby challenging the deterministic approach that considers technology as an independent driver of social transformation.
