Topic of the Thesis:What is the influence of social innovation on the diffusion of technological innovation?

Abstract:The new environmental technologies raise many questions regarding their diffusion (Markard, Raven, et Truffer 2012).These technologies are called eco-technologies and are defined as "the implementation of new, or significantly improved, products (goods and services), processes, marketing methods, organizational structures and institutional arrangements which, with or without intent, lead to environmental improvements compared to relevant alternatives »1. They are considered nowadays as a fundamental issue to limit negative externalities of our production and consumption system. However, few researches develop a framework based on interactions between civil society2 and technology (Hojnik et Ruzzier 2016; Karakaya, Hidalgo, et Nuur 2014; Kesidou et Demirel 2012),although they are of primary importance to understand the complex deployment of technological innovation (Dosi, Moneta, et Stepanova 2017; Moglia, Cook, et McGregor 2017; Ramella et Trigilia 2010; Trigilia 2001; Rogers 2003; Steyer et Zimmermann 2004). Determinants of the diffusion of new technologies are links between individuals conditioned by geographical and cognitive proximities (Vicente et Suire 2007, 2009). Indeed the choice of adopting new technologies concerns also developing new social practices (Metcalfe 2001). Thus, I choose to question the role of civil society in the transition to a new socio-technical paradigm (Giovanni Dosi 1982; Giovanni Dosi et Nelson 2009; Freeman 1991; Nelson et Winter 1982). My project aims at identifying the impact of network of actors coming from civil society in the diffusion of eco-innovation and new environmental social practices and studying the way social innovation can act as translator to diffuse technology in society. This work aims at providing comparative perspective between different countries (France, Germany and Italy) with three different institutional traditions to study the impact of social and institutional factors on development and influence of social innovation.
