Topic of the thesis: Solidarity, struggles and everyday actions of resistance: a comparative analysis of de-bordering practices in North-East Italy and mainland Greece.
Abstract: In the aftermath of the so-called "European refugee crisis" of 2015, processes of multiplication and reinforcement of borders have been established and sedimented in Italy and Greece. As a reaction, various forms of collective actions, struggles and solidarity practices have developed over the years: solidarity movements, grassroots - and largely informal - groups, independent volunteers have represented an essential response in both countries, while also migrants and refugees have reacted mobilizing in various ways and developing different practices of resistance. Considering these situations, the present research project wants to analyze, with a comparative approach, the different de-bordering practices developed in reaction to the migration management policies that came into effect from 2018-2019 in the contexts of northeastern Italy and mainland Greece. The study will investigate primarily the policies and institutional arrangements through which mobility, reception and asylum are managed; secondly, it will take in considerations all the solidarity practices and forms of collective actions carried out by migrants and the civil society, focusing on the motivations, dynamics, transformations, encounters and clashes underneath them, with the aim to show their political and transformative power and the outcomes on subjectivities. Special attention will be given to the role of urban spaces in the construction of collective actions and solidarity practices and to the specificity of the case studies where the so-called "refugee crisis" has become structural. From the comparison of similar, but also extremely different contexts, the different types of mobilization enacted and the different consequences arising will emerge, as well as the different motivations, political approaches and outcomes.
