Topic of thesis: Fragmented Sovereignty and Overlapping Legitimacy: Dynamics of Security and Military Privatization in Weak States
Abstract: Through a comparative analysis of how different weak and fragile states employ and relate to private military and security companies (PMSCs), the research centers the attention on the relation between the public and the private sector in the management of military affairs. The economic, juridical and political-military dimensions of such a relation, exogenous and endogenous threats, military doctrines and cultural organizations are identified as the crucial dynamics that spark the different approaches these countries have adopted in dealing with PMSCs. The empirical and theoretical comparison highlights relevant issues linked to international and national security, political violence, the conduction of war and the effects of privatization on states’ sovereignty and legitimacy, explaining the diverse consequences the employment of PMSCs had on different units of political action.
