Topic of thesis: The role of social network websites in the construction of gendered selves
Abstract: The aim of the present research project is to investigate the role played by social media and particularly by social network websites in the construction of gender identities. In fact, social media can enhance or criticize specific patterns of femininity and masculinity concerning roles, behaviours, action, body images, physical appearance and clothing. Firstly, I intend to explore teenagers' narrations and self-presentations on social network platforms in order to understand the mechanisms through which they do or undo gender on social media. Moreover, in a context strongly characterized by the ubiquitous presence of social media and by the relevance they assume in individuals' lives, the research aims to understand which gender models and patterns are conveyed at a much more structural level. To better investigate such mechanisms, both qualitative methods (in depth interviews with teenagers) and digital methods (analysis of teenagers' SNSs profiles) will be used.
