Topic of the thesis: Interaction, social classes, and attitudes towards inequality in contemporary welfare regimes

Abstract: This project aims to analyze the influence that the scope of social policies of contemporary welfare regimes has on the interaction patterns of social classes and on the configuration of people's attitudes towards inequality. The last decade has been globally marked by massive social demonstrations, which share the criticism of countries' social policies and their socio-economic implications, constituting one of the main problems faced by contemporary welfare regimes. In this regard, from perspectives such as contemporary communitarianism, it has often been argued that the emergence of non-universalist targeted policies has generated two major social problems: firstly, that public institutions have ceased to be meeting places for different people, giving rise to increasingly homophilic social relations, and secondly, that for this reason, individuals feel less and less part of a social whole, affecting their distributive considerations. However, these theoretical postulates have been scarcely evaluated empirically, relegating the study of attitudes towards inequality to a merely individual or national approach, forgetting an intersubjective level centered on people's social relations. Using mainly quantitative methods, this thesis project aims to fill this gap in the literature on welfare regimes, social cohesion, and distributive justice, exploring the influence of the scope of social policies on the patterns of interaction between and within social classes, as well as on people's attitudes towards inequality.
