Topic of the thesis: Understanding homogamy from a comparative perspective. A multi-dimensional and life-course approach through ABM

Abstract: Marriage is one of the milestone choices in the life course of individuals. It is a crucial step in the process of family formation, and it does influence the reproduction of social structure. For these and other reasons, it is a phenomenon worthy of systematic investigation. Sociological literature has long recognised that behaviours in this market result both from opportunities and preferences. This research aims to produce a clearer understanding of homogamous patterns, in terms of trends and interactions with the institutional framework. To this end, the purpose of this study is to estimate preferences over different social dimensions - among which homogamy is more or less observed - under different opportunity structures, and then to test various hypotheses about individuals' behaviours.
