Topic of the thesis: Employee voice and silence in modern organizations: Unresolved issues and new insights

Abstract: In recent decades, organizations and the roles of employees have changed profoundly, influenced by the spread of digital technologies and the rise in workplace diversity. New equity, transparency, sustainability, and well-being challenges related to employee voice and silence emerge from these two societal and workplace trends. Therefore, conducting a thorough analysis of employee voice and silence is critical to fully understand what factors determine whether or not employees speak up and the consequences triggered by their actions. This project addresses three research areas: the voice content and organizational/employee outcomes, how digitalization affects the expression of voice (or silence), and the relationships between voice channels and voice/silence behaviors. This project will offer a comprehensive understanding of voice and silence, considering multiple perspectives and including the points of view of employees, managers, and the organization as a whole. The analyses' outcomes will not be limited to the mere deepening of theoretical knowledge but will also provide implications for practitioners. How to structure voice systems to facilitate employee participation and which employee contributions should be promoted will be highlighted.

Research interests: Employee voice; employee silence; human capital; organizational innovation; employee outcomes.
