Topic of thesis: Contemporary fatherhood as a gendered experience; interplay of masculine identity with paternal role; dimensions of paternal involvement in child rearing; influence of public discourses and social class in constructing fatherhood and fathering.
Abstract: My project aims at investigating contemporary fatherhood in relation to masculinity and the interplay between the doing of masculine gender identities and activities of fathering, focusing on the dimensions of breadwinning, material child care and the emotional bonding between father and child. The research will adopt qualitative methodologies, basing on in-depth interviews with fathers (and mothers) of children aged 0-3 and on content analysis of mass media advertisement vehiculating images of fatherhood, in order to investigate the influence of discourse on the construction of (gendered) subjectivities. The dimension of social class will be taken into account as well, with the aim to observe whether relationships of marginalisation among different masculinities (according to socio-economic status) leads to different representations and enacting of fatherhood and fathering activities.
