Abstract
After sketching a broad overview of how laboratory experiments are used in social science, the presentation focuses on the main features characterizing the role of unstructured (non-standard) experiments in interdisciplinary fields of research. By "artificially" recreating specific social/organizational conditions, unstructured laboratory experiments stress the usual constraints of standard laboratory experiments, aiming to dissect more in depth socio-cognitive mechanisms involved in individual and collective decision-making. Unless as merely alternative these studies can be placed on a complementary level with regards to more traditional research paths in social sciences. An example of unstructured experiment is presented, also to show the use of interdisciplinary research tools such as cognitive mapping techniques.
